Cartmel Village and Priory and the Cartmel Peninsula
The village of Cartmel, close to Grange-over-Sands, grew up
around the twelfth century Priory Church, which according to legend,
was built in response to a heavenly voice. The Priory is one of the
finest ecclesiastical buildings in the north of England - a
beautiful place of worship, a concert venue and a visitor attraction
with professional guided tours every Wednesday throughout the summer
months.
The village itself
is truly idyllic with a picturesque square, quiet flower filled
corners, walk along the river bank flanked by terraced houses, with
flower beds like jewelled bracelets along the waters edge. The quiet
roads, lanes and byways lead to many enticing footpaths through lush
pastures and ancient woodland in the Vale of Cartmel
