The Destination

The Lake District Peninsulas is quickly becoming a favoured option for group travelWindermere Lake Cruises organisers and educational visits. Many groups and schools who already visit the area are delighted with not only the variety of attractions, but also the warm welcome they receive and the opportunity to include a new area on their traditional Lake District Tour.
Here are just a few reasons why the Lake District Peninsulas is an ideal destination for groups.

The Dock Museum
  • There is easy access from junction 36 of the M6 on the A590 with Grange-over-Sands being approximately 12 miles from this junction and Ulverston is 25 miles from this junction.
  • There is an excellent variety of visitor attractions catering for a wide range of tastes and budgets. Many offer incentives to drivers/group organisers and several attractions are free. Two of the area's major attractions, the Dock Museum and Colony Candles, charge no admission fee.
  • There are a number of hotels in the area, which welcome groups and offer competitive prices.
  • There is free coach parking available in Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness with easy access to shops, attractions and eating-places.

A Classic Tour of the Lake District Peninsulas
10.00 Coach arrives in the picturesque village of Cartmel with its idyllic market square, charming speciality shops and impressive 12th Century Priory Church. Cartmel has a delightful of genuine old world buildings, many serving as friendly inns and well stocked shops offering a variety of Lakeland products including the famous home-made sticky toffee pudding.

11.40 Coach departs Cartmel for the short journey to Ulverston

12.00 Coach arrives on the free coach parking in Ulverston town centre, for a "meet and greet" by Furness Tourism Partnership.

12.10 Time to explore this traditional and friendly market town, whose charter was granted in 1280. Ulverston boast a host of charming speciality shops, cobbled streets and curious winding ginnels. A bustling street market takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays with our very own town crier on hand to extend an official welcome to the town.

13.45 Coach departs Ulverston for the scenic journey along the coast road, to the Dock Museum in Barrow. The Coast Road offers spectacular views across Morecambe Bay.

14.15 Coach arrives at the Dock Museum, a spectacular modern museum built over an original graving dock. Groups can explore the fascinating history of Barrow-in-Furness and discover how it grew from a tiny 19th century hamlet to the biggest iron and steel centre in the world and a major shipbuilding force in just 40 years. The "Porthole Pantry" Café serves delicious refreshments on site. The Dock Museum is fully accessible to wheelchair users.

15.30 Coach departs the Dock Museum for the short journey to Colony Candles.

15.45 Coach arrives at Colony Candles, Europe's leading manufacturer of scented candles, to watch age-old techniques of candle-making and to visit the excellent retail outlet for gift ideas. The restaurant "Chandlers" is also on site.

Millers, Monks and Mariners
10.00 Coach arrives at the award winning Aquarium of the Lakes, home to the UK's largest collection of freshwater fish. This attraction explores the journey of a Lakeland river from mountain to sea, where groups can see the resident otters or take a walk in the Lake Districts only underwater tunnel on the recreated lake bed and marvel at the diving ducks.

11.15 Depart Aquarium of the Lakes for a scenic journey along the Coast Road to Gleaston Watermill, which is locates to the ruins of Gleaston Castle.

12.00 Arrive at Gleaston Watermill for a fascinating tour of this imposing water corn mill, lovingly restored by its present owners. Groups will see the 18 foot water wheel and milling machinery in action and can enjoy a guided tour of this wonderful site. Dusty Miller licensed café serves a wide range of delicious home cooked local food including some mouth watering scones.

14.00 Depart for the Dock Museum

14.20 Coach arrives at the Dock Museum, a Maritime Museum of regional significance, which is suspended in a Victorian Graving Dock. Groups can enjoy a tour of the museum and explore the maritime history of the area. Brand new audiovisual displays include the secrets behind the building of submarines in the town. (Refreshments are also available).

15.30 Depart from the Dock Museum for Furness Abbey, the second wealthiest Cistercian Abbey in the country.

15.40 Arrive at Furness Abbey to discover the mystery behind the life of a medieval monk. Audiotape tours are available or a guided tour can be arranged for advanced bookings. This is thought to be the hiding place of King John's missing jewels and the Holy Grail.

17.00 Depart Furness Abbey. Option: Why not visit Chequers Hotel for high tea?

From Tigers and Tamarins to Tarka the Otter
9.30 Arrive at the Aquarium of the Lakes - an award winning attraction boasting the UK's largest collection of freshwater fish and which explores the journey of a Lakeland river from mountain to sea. Groups can see the resident otters or take a walk along a re-created lake bed in the Lake Districts only underwater tunnel.

11.15 Depart Lakeside Station for a steam train journey on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway through the contrasting lake and river scenes of the Leven Valley.

11.33 Arrive at the Victorian Station of Haverthwaite and then take a wonderful scenic journey along the coast road to Gleaston Watermill, which is located close to the ruins of Gleaston Castle.

12.15 Arrive at Gleaston Watermill for a fascinating tour of the imposing water corn mill, lovingly restored by its present owners. 13.45 Depart Gleaston Watermill for South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Lakelands only zoological park, set in seventeen acres, with the rarest tiger, zebra and pig in the world. This is one of Europe's leading conservation centres and Britain's top Tiger Conservation Centre.

14.15 Arrive at the park and enjoy a walk around this fascinating attraction, which operates vital nature conservation programmes. Look out for our daily programme of events such as Tiger feeding - unique in Europe at 2.30.

15.45 Depart South Lakes Wild Animal Park.

The Edwardian Seaside Adventure
10.00 Coach arrives at Stott Park Bobbin Mill for a fascinating insight into the story of the cotton industry, wooden bobbin manufacturing and the people who worked there. Your group can enjoy a guided tour of this genuine early nineteenth century working museum and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the Steam Engine is in operation. This attraction is located 1-2 miles from Lakeside Steamer Pier.

11.00 Depart Stott Park Bobbin Mill for the elegant Edwardian seaside resort of Grange-over-sands.

11.30 Arrive in Grange-over-sands where your group can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the traffic free promenade, visit the beautiful ornamental gardens or browse around the town's many speciality shops, including the best butchers in Britain.

12.45 Depart Grange-over-sands and travel to the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish at Holker Hall.

13.00 Arrive at Holker Hall to visit the 25 acre National Award Winning Gardens, a superb Stately Home, with no ropes to barricade you and for Motoring Memories, the Lakeland Motor Museum with over 150 classic and vintage cars, bicycles and motorbikes, plus the Donald Campbell Legend Exhibition. There is a café on site where lunch can be arranged or there are picnic tables which look out over the 125 acre Deer Park.

16.25 Depart for Lakeside Steamer Pier

16.45 Board the Windermere Iron Steam Boat at Lakeside, which departs at 16.55 for an unforgettable 6 mile cruise to Bowness.

17.35 The Steam Boat arrives at Bowness.
